Louise Jean McCary (1896-1963) was an African American poet and writer known for her vivid and powerful depictions of Black life and culture. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, McCary moved to Chicago in the 1920s and became an active member of the city's vibrant Black literary scene. Her poetry and essays appeared in a number of publications, including the Chicago Defender and Opportunity magazine. Louise Jean McCary was also a social activist and advocate for civil rights, and her work often reflected her commitment to racial justice. Despite facing significant challenges as a Black woman writer in the early 20th century, McCary's work has continued to inspire and resonate with readers today.
