Congratulations on taking this step in your yoga journey and deciding to become a Certified Yoga Instructor! It can be a big decision and there are so many choices out there for yoga instructor training programs so we’d like to offer you some tips before you make your decision.
The yoga world has exploded in popularity in recent years and the wellness industry in general has become a multi-billion-dollar industry. This is great news if you want to follow your passion for yoga and become a certified yoga instructor as there are a lot of opportunities. But with all industries, there are great certified yoga schools, such as Inner Yoga Training in Bali and there are also others who don’t follow any guidelines at all. While it’s important to do a yoga course that resonates with you, there are also some things to look for and we would recommend choosing a school that is certified with a governing body.
There is currently no legal requirement for yoga teachers, yoga schools or yoga studios to be certified and there is no single international governing body. However often yoga studios will ask for your yoga instructor certification before they will hire you and it can also affect your ability to get insurance.
If you are looking to gain your foundational 200-hour yoga instructor training we would recommend joining a school that is certified with Yoga Alliance based in the US. While they are not the only governing body (there is also Yoga Alliance UK, Yoga Alliance Australia among others), they are the most recognized internationally and have done a lot of work in recent years to improve their course standards and hold yoga schools to higher accountability.
Each yoga school that is certified with Yoga Alliance is required to submit a curriculum for approval. This ensures that you are being taught a core curriculum with minimum requirements and hours to become a quality teacher, that covers asana, pranayama, meditation, anatomy, biomechanics, history of yoga, philosophy, ethics and teaching methodology. In addition to this they require that the lead teacher has a minimum of 1,000 teaching hours after completing their own certified yoga instructor course, before they can lead a 200-hour yoga teacher. This means you’ll gain knowledge from a teacher with a lot of experience. Once you successfully complete your yoga instructor training you can register with Yoga Alliance as a teacher.
Some yoga schools offer an intensive 3-4 week 200-hour yoga teacher training while often studios choose to offer 200 hours over many weekends. Other schools might choose to offer certified yoga instructor courses in modules for example 4 blocks of 50 hours. So, it’s important that you choose a schedule that will fit with your life and other commitments. The advantage though of completing your yoga instructor certification in Bali is that you are completely immersed in the experience without the distractions of daily life.
Our final recommendation before you become a certified yoga instructor would be practice, practice, practice. You will be doing a lot of yoga each day so we suggest you start practicing at least 4-5 times each week for 90 minutes. If you’re considering the Inner Yoga Teacher Training in Bali it’s good if you start attending some yin yoga classes in addition to vinyasa as their certification course offers both styles of yoga in one training. On successful completion you will be certified to teach both vinyasa and yin yoga.
Inner Yoga Training’s next yoga instructor certification in Bali is 2 – 24 June.
