Calicut University is the largest in Kerala by area, colleges, and degrees and was established in 1968. It is the second university to be established in Kerala. The university caters to the educational needs and aspirations of the youth in the Malabar region, which is among some of the most educationally backward regions in the country. The School of Distance Education of Calicut University, formerly known as the Institute of Correspondence and Further Education, was started in the academic year 1981–82. It has now become one of the university's leading departments and distance education providers. SDE is doing its best to reach out to the poor and wants to provide remote facilities for the benefit of the poor. It caters to the needs of thousands of students from different parts of the country.
