The English National Curriculum for primary schools is designed to ensure that all children are able to read, write and speak English accurately and fluently by the time they finish primary school.

There are three stages of teaching in primary schools: Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2), Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) and Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9). All children follow the same curriculum until they reach Key Stage 3 when they can choose from a range of subjects.

In year 2, pupils take a national test in reading and maths called SATs. These tests are used to assess how well pupils have been learning in these subjects during their first two years at school.
